Learning in the Garden with Wendy, our Garden Educator

The garden at Open Alternative School was recently used as a demonstration site for the Growing Edible Education: A Symposium of Best Practices. Fifteen educators from the tri-county area and beyond observed a compost lesson with the OAS middle school (6th-6th grade), toured the garden and worm bins, learned about elementary garden education and ate a healthy cook from scratch school lunch from the cafeteria. The purpose of the symposium was to highlight local exemplary education programs and share how they are using the school garden to teach students about healthy eating habits, sustainable gardening practices and local farms. The OAS garden has been a model for garden education for K-6th graders since 1993.
